The producers of the DisabiliTease Festival decided that our 2022 event will be presented in a hybrid format! This includes our shows, workshops, and new this year – watch parties!
How did we come to this decision?
COVID-19 caused the world to pivot to virtual platforms. While many performers have been able to go back to traditional in-person performances – many people were, and are still, restricted by physical location.
- A virtual show format removes barriers that would otherwise prevent people from not only performing, but also adds additional accessibility with funding for filming, resources, and community support.
- While the continued risk of COVID-19 prevails, especially for those whose disabilities include a compromised immune system, our festival allows them to continue to enjoy the art of burlesque/drag/cirque from the safety of their homes.
- Additionally, it allows them to see individuals similar to them in an art form in which they often are invisible.
- Not only are they able to connect with fellow performers, but also the same barriers are removed for audience members with virtual shows.
- DTF includes worldwide participation. Removing these physical barriers with an online platform connects us to a larger community of disabled artists, issues, and the uniqueness of this art at the intersection of disability.
People with disabilities are disproportionately affected both medically and financially by COVID-19 and we realized that limiting the majority of participants to those willing and able to travel to Minnesota would create a festival lineup that was not representative of our entire community. Therefore, we are creating a hybrid event to foster greater inclusion.
What does hybrid mean for the 2022 DisabiliTease Festival?
- Shows:
- All shows will be presented via Zoom with pre-recorded performances and a live emcee hosting from their respective locations. We will have shows at 8pm on July 15th and 16th, and at 12pm on July 17th. These shows will be available to rent/purchase a few weeks after the event. Note: All timing for shows is according to the Central Time Zone. Modify into your time zone.
- Workshops:
- All workshops will be presented live via Zoom during the day on Saturday, July 16th. These workshops will also be available to rent/purchase a few weeks after the event.
- Watch Parties:
- We will be partnering with individuals and organizations across the globe to co-host in-person watch parties as we understand there will be those who are comfortable gathering in person.
- This way local communities will have the ability to create mini-events at the levels that feel safe for their specific community in partnership with the DisabiliTease Festival.
- Apply at https://tinyurl.com/DTF2022WatchParties. Applications are due July 1. We will be reviewing and accepting Watch Party applications on a rolling basis.
